So far it’s been a great start for SPEAKS. The band formed in 2011 and we spent most of the year rehearsing a great live show and getting to know each other more. Learning what we like and what we really don’t like about each other but hey nobody is perfect! ;)
Towards the end of the year we started booking gigs and have been lucky to play at some amazing nights in London, Brighton and even one in Essex.
We got the opportunity to play at The O2, London which was odd being such a new unknown band playing in this huge venue but it was an amazing experience and we made some cool new friends.
We popped our live cherry down in Brighton at a pretty cool pub called the Hobgoblin, this was a lot of fun. I don’t think much more could have gone wrong during the set but at the same time I don’t think we could have had more fun. We made the most of it, everyone in the crowd was moving even if the feed back was killer, Jake’s guitar was not playing ball and the sound guy was on stage with us most of the set, it was a success and we was buzzing. This was the first glimpse we got as to where SPEAKS was going and could go.
We went on to play a few more shows in London and Brighton but for me it was the Essex show that was a lot of bloody fun. It meant a trip in the van, our first van trip as a band. We moaned a lot, laughed even more and then spent the night on a boat!?? Yep! Jake and Dan both are Essex lads so we spent the night on Jake’s mums boat, it was an amazing ending to a pretty awesome but fucking long day.
Kirk, Kelly, Jake and I(lele) had to leave the gaff at 6am for a photo shoot at The O2, yes 6AM!!! Dan and Liam managed to wiggle out of this one. The boys stopped for McDonald’s breakfast twice on the way, which I thought was pretty impressive. After the shoot we headed back down to Brighton to sleep on Dan and Jake’s sofa and watch Breaking Bad. When Dan got back from work, we went to pick up Liam and headed down to Essex.
When we arrived we all headed straight to the bar and filled up on our free drink, unloading the gear could wait… After a drink and a bit of a dance the boy set up the gear. It was the first time Kirk was using his new custom drum kit he built. It’s fucking beautiful and it sounds amazing. BUT obvs something had to go wrong.. during our set the drums started moving all over the place on the wooden floors. But luckily a mate of ours stepped in and sat in front of the drums stopping them from moving. I really enjoyed this show the crowd was great, it felt very close and personal. Again we made some cool new friends and I’m really looking forward to playing Essex again.
After the show we headed back to Jake’s boat, fuck it was huge and just like a real house. We cooked pizza, drank beer, smoked spliff and sat around the wood burning fire. Liam was DJ for the night playing us a mix of pretty mega tunes from Jake’s mum’s CD collection. We all had a bed to sleep in and woke up feeling yes hung over but stoked!
Now it’s the new year and we are ready for more!! We have been writing new songs, filming a new music video and we are working on a new live set. Show for SPEAKS this year will be starting late January/start of February. We have some exciting stuff lined up which we will spill to you as soon as we can…
Make sure you tune in for the next SPEAKS LEAKS!!!
